Privacy
Your personal privacy is important, and Howl wants to ensure that all of your communication through our software is safe and secure. The following privacy statement is meant to provide you with the information you need to ensure you are using Howl in a safe and effective manor.
Encrypted Communication
All communication from both the Howl Display Plugin and Howl for iPhone is encrypted using industry standard secure encryption, the same encryption used for online banking and shopping.
Hashed Passwords
When an account is created, your password is immediately hashed using a salted, cryptographically strong hashing algorithm. It is not retrievable by us or anyone else. For this reason, we cannot provide password recovery, but neither can anyone else.
Email Use
Providing an email address is completely optional and will only ever be used when changes are made to your account or in the case of password recovery. Your email address or other information will never be sold to third-parties.
Notification Data
Howl retains certain contextual information about a notification while attempting to maximize your privacy. To allow certain features, like filtering by computer, Howl retains unique hostnames you use to send notifications but does not keep historical records of the addresses used by those hostnames.
Howl in no way controls the content of a notification, however, which may contain sensitive data. While this data is safe while inside the Howl infrastructure, losing your phone or leaving your phone unlocked could expose your personal data sent through Howl, like any other application on your phone, to third parties. We recommend locking your phone and only using applications which send notifications which you are comfortable receiving.
Statistical Information
Howl periodically sends certain information solely for the purpose of ensuring we're building the best application for you. This information includes details about the particular model of your phone, the version of iPhone OS X it is running, and the version of Howl being used. No personal information is ever sent or recorded for statistical purposes. This information may be made public as aggregated data, but individual records will never be shared. For example, Tanka Tech may share information about the number of users on a particular version of iPhone OS
